چکیده

Seasonal infl uenza remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality, especially in the elderly.1 Elderly residents of long-term care facilities are especially susceptible because of their frailty, increased age and the presence of multiple comorbidities. Health care workers (HCWs) can introduce infl uenza into health care settings, as a signifi cant number of HCWs (10 to 30%) are infected with infl uenza each winter2 3 and most of them continue to work, despite infection (approximately 50 to 80% of those infected).4 5 The USA Advisory Committee on Immunisation Practices recommends infl uenza vaccination to HCWs because of their contact with those at risk of complications from infl uenza.6 Despite these recommendations, only 36% of HCWs in the United States are vaccinated against infl uenza annually.7 Other previous studies demonstrate a range of immunization rates for overseas doctors from 38% to 82%.8 9

Influenza Vaccination of Healthcare Workers Is an Important Approach for Reducing Transmission of Influenza from Staff to Vulnerable Patients

Influenza vaccine is effective at preventing influenza in healthy young adults.[1] The strategy to encourage influenza vaccination for health care workers is partly based on the simple notion that this can reduce the risk of staff acquiring and transmitting influenza to vulnerable patients and thereby reduce associated morbidity and mortality. A number of investigators have attempted to demonst...

Inducing Herd Immunity against Seasonal Influenza in Long-Term Care Facilities through Employee Vaccination Coverage: A Transmission Dynamics Model

INTRODUCTION Vaccinating healthcare workers (HCWs) in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) may effectively induce herd immunity and protect residents against influenza-related morbidity and mortality. We used influenza surveillance data from all LTCFs in New Mexico to validate a transmission dynamics model developed to investigate herd immunity induction. MATERIAL AND METHODS We adjusted a previ...

Influenza vaccination for healthcare workers who work with the elderly.

BACKGROUND Healthcare workers' (HCWs) influenza rates are unknown, but may be similar to the general public and they may transmit influenza to patients. OBJECTIVES To identify studies of vaccinating HCWs and the incidence of influenza, its complications and influenza-like illness (ILI) in individuals >/= 60 in long-term care facilities (LTCFs). SEARCH STRATEGY We searched CENTRAL (The Cochr...

Influenza vaccination coverage of healthcare workers and residents and their determinants in nursing homes for elderly people in France: a cross-sectional survey

BACKGROUND Nursing home residents bear a substantial burden of influenza morbidity and mortality. Vaccination of residents and healthcare workers (HCWs) is the main strategy for prevention. Despite recommendations, influenza vaccination coverage among HCWs remains generally low. METHODS During the 2007-2008 influenza season, we conducted a nationwide survey to estimate influenza vaccination c...
